Synopsis:

Evgeny and Lydia Baranov, a husband and wife team paint simultaneously on the same canvas.  This documentary short looks at their synergy and the dynamics of such an undertaking.

Director’s statement:

On a sunny day in June while shooting in Alaska for my documentary Road to Maquis, I found myself driving aimlessly south from Anchorage.  Suddenly, while whizzing by at over 100 km/h something struck my eye- just off the highway in a field.  A man and a woman had an easel set up and were painting a landscape.  I don’t know what it was, but something was beckoning me to turn around for another look.  I pulled a U-turn and backtracked to their position.  After introducing myself as a documentary filmmaker, they agreed to letting me film them.  I watched in awe as, in total silence, they applied their individual paint brushes to the same canvas simultaneously.  The duo claim to be the only couple in North America to paint on the same canvas at the same time.

I learned something that day:  had I not trusted my gut and turned around, another story would have remained untold.  Amazing stories are all around us, all we as filmmakers need to do is to ask if we may tell them.
